SAN JOSE, Calif.
— The NHL announced Tuesday that it will restore the Hawks logo on its jerseys and the back of its caps.
The decision follows years of debate and lobbying from hockey fans, and comes as the league seeks to build support for its new $250 million arena.
The Hawks’ iconic logo is also on the back plates of the jerseys and caps of many other NHL teams.
“This is an important milestone,” said NHL commissioner Gary Bettman.
“As the world watches the NBA’s unveiling of the new Brooklyn Nets, we’re seeing a number of other sports teams coming forward with new designs, and we’re proud to announce the return of the Hawks to the league’s uniform.”
The NHL is planning to have the new logo in place by the end of 2019.
